Unscented Natural Dish Soap by Better Life "Dish it Out" Review

Unscented Natural Dish Soap by Better Life "Dish it Out" Review

Product Review

For this product review I tried the unscented version of "Dish it Out" Natural Dish Soap by Better Life. "Dish it Out" is also available in Clary Sage & Citrus scent.

Better Life brand was founded by two fathers who were concerned about their toddlers crawling on surfaces covered in toxic residue from conventional cleaners. Better Life offers an array of all-natural cleaning products that are safe for people and the planet. Their offerings include household cleaners, hand soaps and lotions, produce wash, stain and odor remover, laundry detergent and more.

I was intending to search for a safe natural dish soap, so when a representative contacted me about Better Life products, I was eager to give their "Dish it Out" Natural Dish Soap a try.

Disclosure: The product featured in this post was provided to me free of charge.

A Natural Alternative to

"Dish it Out" Natural Dish Soap by Better Life is a natural alternative to dish washing liquids containing sulfates, parabens, and synthetic dyes and fragrances. It seems odd that the soaps we use to clean our plates and glasses are neon colored and artificially scented. You may think the dish washing liquid you use is harmless, but many brands contain dangerous chemicals. Toxic soap residue can remain on your plates, glasses, and utensils after washing and rinsing. And if you wash dishes without wearing gloves, some of the dish soap may be absorbed into your skin and blood stream. It is not just people who are at risk. Once the soap is rinsed down the drain it can affect aquatic wildlife.

I was dismayed when I discovered in the EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning that Dawn Ultra Concentrated Dishwashing Liquid in Original scent had a "D" rating (High Concern. Likely hazards to health or the environment. May also have poor ingredient disclosure.) Dawn touts its commitment to saving wildlife, while including ingredients in its products that pose the risk of "chronic aquatic toxicity," which means "potential or actual properties of a substance to cause adverse effects to aquatic organisms during exposures which are determined in relation to the life-cycle of the organism".[1. Cleangredients, Additional Aquatic Toxicity- Chronic in Surfactants, https://www.cleangredients.org/ingredient-modules/surfactants/attributes/additional-aquatic-toxicity, viewed 2/24/2014]

After discovering how dangerous Dawn dish soap is, I purchased Trader Joe's Next to Godliness Mandarin Orange Liquid Dish Soap thinking it must be safer. But I was wrong! Trader Joe's liquid dish soap has an "F" rating (Highest Concern. Potentially significant hazards to health or the environment or poor ingredient disclosure.). Don't trust the name of a product without checking the ingredients label!

Observations

"Dish it Out" Natural Dish Soap is a refreshing clear color. That makes more sense for cleaning the plates I plan to eat meals from than bright blue or orange.

I love that "Dish it Out" comes in an unscented version. You can also purchase it in Clary Sage & Citrus scent if you prefer. I am extremely sensitive to scents, even natural ones, so I am always looking for unscented products. Better Life also offers other unscented products, including what-EVER! - Natural all-purpose cleaner; Spin-Credible - Natural laundry detergent; I Can See Clearly, WOW! -  Natural window/glass cleaner; Automatic Magic - Natural dishwasher gel; Produce Wash - All natural fruit and vegetable cleaner; and Green Screen - Natural screen cleaner.

Effectiveness

Better Life Natural Dish Soap bubbles well, even with just a drop. It effectively cleans even greasy dishes, without leaving behind smelly chemical residue.

Rating 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Better Life "Dish it Out" Unscented Natural Dish Soap infused with Vitamin E and Aloe earns its first star for containing only natural or plant derived ingredients.

Half a star is awarded for being packaged in a recyclable plastic bottle.

Better Life Dish Soap earns a star for effectively washing dishes, without being hard on your hands.

"Dish it Out" also earns a star for being a good value for your money. At $7.99 for a 22 oz bottle it may be twice as expensive as conventional dish washing soaps, but it is worth it, since it is so much safer to use and better for the environment. Plus, a little bit goes a long way.

A final glowing star is awarded for being a pleasure to use. It's about time there is a dish soap free from fake colors and fragrances!

Overall, I highly recommend Better Life "Dish it Out" Unscented Natural Dish Soap, which earns 4.5 out of 5 stars.
