Posh Push Book Review

I recommend that any pregnant mama-to-be put Posh Push: Modern Girls Reveal Secrets for a More Natural Birth by Patricia Grube and Sara Smildzins, Posh Push LP, copyright 2012, at the top of their reading list. I purchased the Kindle edition from Amazon.

Author Sara Smildzins is a mother of two and author Patricia Grube is her prenatal yoga instructor and birth doula.

Update May 30, 2016: It appears that this book is no longer available for purchase. This is very disappointing, as Posh Push was one of my top books to recommend to pregnant friends.

Analysis

Posh Push was recommended to me by a substitute teacher in prenatal yoga class, and I am so glad that I took her advice and read the book! This is by far the best book I have read on labor and delivery. I started my pregnancy-related reading early, and read a couple books on labor and delivery before my sister gave birth, two years ago. Both of those books seemed a bit out dated and drab. Posh Push shows that more natural childbirth is accessible not only to tree-hugging hippies, but also to modern Petunia Pickle Bottom toting hot mamas! Natural childbirth is as ancient as the human race, but it hasn't gone out of style!

Preparing for Natural Childbirth

What I LOVE about Posh Push: Modern Girls Reveal Secrets for a More Natural Birth is that it suggests ways in which to prepare for a more natural birth. And it is not just for ladies who want to have a 100% without-a-doubt completely natural birth. It is for anyone who wants to make the labor, delivery, and bonding process more pleasant and natural.

I am the type of person who likes to prepare ahead of time, so I was thrilled about the idea of being able to do things ahead of time to prepare for childbirth. I would not have sat down for the bar exam without having intensely studied for two months, so why should I sit around and wait for labor to start and then just pray that it goes well?

One of the methods stressed in Posh Push for preparing for labor and delivery is practicing prenatal yoga. I am so thankful that my sister-in-law signed me up for prenatal yoga classes. It was an invaluable gift! As soon as I started taking prenatal yoga I felt that I was doing something to prepare physically, mentally, and spiritually for childbirth and parenting. Becoming a mother is a beautiful journey, and one that should be respected and cherished along the way.

The book also covers other methods to prepare your mind and body for childbirth. Techniques for preparing mentally include hypno-therapy, meditation, visualization techniques, childbirth classes, and positive birth affirmations. Ways to prepare your body include eating wisely, staying hydrated, getting your beauty sleep, getting birth-fit and practicing relaxation and breathing. Labor and delivery are physically demanding tasks that require strength and endurance. I wouldn't run a marathon without training first, so why should I go into labor without first strengthening and stretching my body?

Beautiful Birth Stories

One of my favorite sections of Posh Push is the chapter in which modern women share their beautiful birth experiences. If there is something you want to achieve, it is crucial to be able to visualize your goal. This chapter allowed me to come up with a mental image of what a positive natural birth would be like. I loved that in one of the stories the mama danced through labor! I can now visualize myself taking a long walk along the beach during early labor, using some yoga poses at home to relax, eating a high protein meal, taking a calming shower (which always seemed to make labor progress!) and eventually making our way to the hospital, where I will continue moving my body throughout labor.

Choosing Your Entourage and Preparing a Birth Plan

I also appreciated the sections on choosing your entourage and preparing a birth plan. It struck me while reading these sections that many women probably spend more time researching items for their baby shower registry than the amount of time they spend researching hospitals/birth centers/home births, doctors/midwives/doulas, and coping techniques. After reading the entourage chapter I did more research on the hospitals in my area and switched to one that sounded more comfortable and supportive of natural birth.

Using the sample provided in the book, I was also able to easily write up a birth plan, which I will use as talking points to discuss with my doctor. I know that things may go very unexpectedly when the day arrives and that I need to be flexible, but at the same time I want to stack the odds in my favor for being able to have a positive successful natural birth experience. I don't want a series of unnecessary  medical interventions leading to a created emergency and need for pain medication or a c-section.

Conclusion

Rating 5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5)

Posh Push: Modern Girls Reveal Secrets for a More Natural Birth earns 5 out of 5 stars and I recommend that all expecting mommies-to-be read it ASAP!

While reading Posh Push, and also The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, I realized just how important it is to have as natural a birth as possible. A natural birth helps get breastfeeding off to a good start. A rewarding breastfeeding relationship makes for a nurturing mother-child relationship. And the child's relationship with his or her mother lays the foundation for all future relationships.

It is never too early to start preparing for the childbirth experience you desire!
