Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum by Aura Cacia Review

Product Review

For this product review I have been using the Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum by Aura Cacia for the past couple weeks. The Vanilla & Vetiver scented Baobab oil is one of Aura Cacia’s four new facial oils. The line of facial oil serums includes Daytime Argan, Deep Rosehip, Nighttime Baobab, and Soothing Tamanu.

The Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum was one of the products that I was the most excited about from the Natural Products Expo West.

A Natural Alternative to

Aura Cacia Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum is an all-natural alternative to facial moisturizers containing parabens (hormone disrupting preservatives), artificial colors, artificial fragrances, and other synthetic ingredients.

Before switching to natural beauty products, I used Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel on my face, which has a score of 4, moderate hazard, in EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. I thought that because I was purchasing fragrance-free cosmetics from Clinique that they were safe. However, although they did not contain fragrance, they did contain other harmful ingredients, such as methylparaben, which can┬ámimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptor.

Ingredients in Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum

  • Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil,
  • Organic Adansonia Digitata (Baobab) Seed Oil,
  • Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil,
  • Organic Vanilla Planifolia (Vanilla) CO2 Extract, and
  • Organic Vetiveria Zizanioides (Vetiver) Oil.

Since the new Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum was not listed in Skin Deep, I created my own report using the database. After entering all the ingredients, it returned an overall score of 0, low hazard. The only ingredient with a score other than 0 was the vetiver oil, which had a score of 2, low hazard. The concerns posed by vetiver oil are “multiple, additive exposure sources, and irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs).[2. Packaging

The organic facial oil comes in a 1 FL OZ (30 ml) clear glass bottle with a plastic pump lid.

Promises

Rest your skin overnight with an application of rich Senegalese baobab oil combined with vanilla and vetiver essential oils.

Directions

After nighttime cleansing, dispense 1 or 2 pumps into palm of hand. Using fingertips, smooth over face and neck. Can be used in place of or prior to applying your moisturizer.

Observations

The Vanilla & Vetiver facial oil from Aura Cacia was the product from the Natural Products Expo West that I was most looking forward to using.

I love the luxurious smooth texture of the Baobab oil and vanilla scent that greets me when it is first applied. However, the scent of vetiver, which smells like smoky wood, takes over and lingers. There is no smell that I like less than the smell of smoke. So, unfortunately, vetiver is not my cup of tea. This product was so close to being perfect! I wish there was a purely vanilla version.

Effectiveness

The Aura Cacia Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum is effective at moisturizing skin, both day and night.

The Baobab oil is a bit thicker than Argan oil, which I was previously using. It also leaves the face a bit shinier. I suppose the thickness is why it is recommended for nighttime use. But I used it both at night and during the day and thought it worked well for a day-time face moisturizer, as well. Perhaps it is slightly less moisturizing that Argan oil.

Rating 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

Aura Cacia Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum earns its first star for containing 100% natural ingredients. It is also certified USDA Organic.

The facial oil earns half a star for being packaged in a clear glass bottle.

The Baobab Facial Oil Serum earns a star for being an effective face moisturizer.

It also earns a star for being a good value for your money. It is currently on sale on the Aura Cacia website for $15.99 (regularly $19.99). Even the regular price is within the normal price range for a 1 fl. oz. bottle of facial oil serum. Using a single pump of oil twice per day, this bottle would last me for about two months.

The Vanilla and Vetiver scented facial oil earns half a star for being a pleasure to use. I would absolutely love this facial oil if it only contained the vanilla essential oil, but I do not like the smoky scent of vetiver. If you happen to like vetiver, then this is the oil for you. I think I would prefer the Daytime Argan Facial Oil Serum or the Soothing Tamanu Facial Oil Serum. Plus, there is always pure Aura Cacia Argan Oil.

Overall, Aura Cacia Nighttime Baobab Facial Oil Serum earns 4 out of 5 stars and I recommend it to those of you who like the scents of both vanilla and vetiver.
