Indah’s Fragrance Free Hand Creme by Chandler Farm Review

Product Review

For this product review I tried Indah’s Fragrance Free Hand Creme by Chandler Farm. This all natural lotion was named after an Orangutan called Indah.

Each time you purchase a Chandler Farm personal care product, a portion of the proceeds go to rainforest and Orangutan conservation. All of the Chandler Farm products are 100% palm oil free.

Vast areas of tropical rain forest are being destroyed and replaced with palm oil plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia. This has pushed Orangutans to the brink of extinction. I became aware of this issue during a trip to Malaysian Borneo in 2009. At one time, the wild Orangutan could swing from tree to tree across the entire island of Borneo. What we saw was quite a different scene. There were exposed dirt hillsides terraced and ready for palm oil trees to be planted, as well as long stretches of already existing palm oil plantations.

I will always remember seeing a wild Orangutan hanging in a lone tree. He was visibly nervous as our boat approached the river bank. He wanted to flee, but there was no escape route. There were no trees nearby for him to swing to. Just the lonely tree in which he stayed.

In order to give Orangutans a chance at survival it is important to avoid purchasing products containing palm oil. In addition to beauty products, palm oil is also used in many junk foods. Check the label next time before you buy!

Due to its mission to raise awareness of this environmental concern, Chandler Farm was one of the brands of natural beauty products that really caught my eye at the Natural Products Expo West.

A Natural Alternative to

Chandler Farm Fragrance Free Hand Creme is an all-natural alternative to hand creams containing artificial fragrances, artificial colors, and paraben preservatives which act as hormone distruptors.

Before I went the natural route, my favorite hand lotion was Bath & Body Works Hand Cream in Warm Vanilla Sugar scent. Unfortunately, I was not able to find the Warm Vanilla Sugar hand cream in the Skin Deep database, or an ingredients list. So I am not able to check its safety right now. The closest product I found in the Skin Deep database was Bath & Body Works Pleasures Body Cream Sweet Pea (2008 formulation), which has a score of 6, moderate hazard.

Ingredients in Indah’s Fragrance Free Hand Creme

  • Tocopherol [Vitamin E].

Chandler Farm Indah’s Hand Creme Fragrance Free is not listed in Skin Deep, so I built my own report using Skin Deep. The result was a score of 1, low hazard, with all ingredients having a score of either 1 or 0.

Packaging

Chandler Farm hand creme comes in a recyclable plastic tube containing 3 oz (88.7 ml).

Promises

Leaves skin feeling soft and moisturized.

Observations

Although this hand cream is fragrance-free, the ingredients it contains give it a sweet candy-like scent. It is a clear/white color and has a thinner texture than many hand creams. It absorbs into skin quickly, without leaving any sticky or greasy residue.

Effectiveness

Idah’s Fragrance Free Hand Creme by Chandler Farm is extremely effective at leaving skin feeling soft. My hands were in bad shape this week, from washing them frequently throughout the day. The skin on the back of my hands was getting dry and scaly. But this hand cream came to the rescue! Now the back of my hands feel (almost) baby-soft!

Rating 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

Chandler Farm Idah’s Fragrance Free Hand Creme earns its first star for containing all-natural ingredients.

The hand cream earns half a star for being packaged in a recyclable plastic tube. It would earn a whole star if the container was made from post-consumer recycled plastic.

The hand moisturizer earns another star for effectively moisturizing and softening hands.

Chandler Farm Hand Creme earns another star for being a good value for your money. At first I thought that $8.99 for a 3 oz bottle of hand lotion sounded expensive. But I did a search online and it is around the average for natural hand lotions.

A final star is awarded for being a pleasure to use. I really like the light sweet scent that I notice while applying the lotion. Best of all, the hand creme leaves hands feeling super soft!

Overall, Chandler Farm Indah’s Hand Creme in Fragrance Free earns 4.5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this natural hand cream and will likely re-stock when the first tube runs out.

Did you know that palm oil plantations are pushing Orangutans to the brink of extinction? Will you be more careful to avoid purchasing products containing palm oil?

  1. […] One thing I did not like about the book is that many of the Naturally Savvy approved healthier snacks contain palm oil. I try to avoid purchasing food and beauty products containing palm oil for environmental reasons. Many of the rainforests in South East Asia are completely destroyed and replaced with palm oil plantations. This destruction of habitat is pushing many species toward extinction. The book mentions this problem on page 76 and says to “contact the company or check out its website to find out if the oil is obtained from environmentally responsible harvesters.” I would rather just pass on any product that contains palm oil. If you are looking for a beauty brand that is conscious about this issue, check out Chandler Farm. […]
