Natural Product Review
For this product review, I tried Eco Nuts Natural Laundry Soap, which is a box of USDA Organic Soap Nuts. Rather than nuts, Soap Nuts are actually dried berries from the Sapindus mukorossi (soapberry) tree that grows in Nepal and India. In the washing machine, the Soap Nuts release saponin, which is a natural cleaning substance.
I ordered a box of Eco Nuts™ that should last for 100 loads of laundry from Amazon for $9.99, with free super saver shipping.

A Natural Alternative to
Eco Nuts™ are a natural alternative to laundry detergents containing artificial fragrances, artificial colors, and other synthetic ingredients.
Traditional laundry detergents cause environmental pollution once they wash down the drain. Detergents containing phosphate can cause algae blooms in fresh water.[1. Environmental Impacts of Detergent, LiveStrong, http://www.livestrong.com/article/151779-environmental-impacts-of-detergent/] Surfactants are used in laundry detergents to change the surface tension between water and oil and help remove the dirt from clothing. - Place 4-5 Eco Nuts™ in the reusable wash bag provided and tie it closed.
- Put it in with your laundry and wash normally.
- Remove the bag at the end of the wash and set aside to dry or use for another load.
- Re-use up to 10 times or until the Eco Nuts™ start to disintegrate.
Eco Nuts™ smell like berries, especially after they have been through the wash. The scent almost makes you want to take a nibble. They look like dried berry shells, but are about the size of hazel nuts. The box is much smaller than I expected, about 4″x4″x2″.
It was fun throwing the little pouch containing five berries into the washing machine. It was much less messy than dealing with liquid or powder laundry detergent.
Each time after washing a load of laundry it’s like a game to find “where did the bag of Eco Nuts go?”. But even if you accidentally throw them in the dryer, the instructions say that is fine.
After three loads of laundry, I am quite happy with how this natural and gentle laundry soap works. The clothes came out clean.
Once dry, the clothing did not smell at all. It did not have an overly “clean” fragrance, but it also did not smell dirty. I like this! I am always looking for fragrance-free options, since I am sensitive to many artificial fragrances. It might take some people a while to become accustomed to not having a perfume scent on their clothes, but I love that Eco Nuts Soap Nuts do not add fragrance to my clothes!
Best of all, the clothes were nice and soft when I folded them!
Update 3/1/2014: We have been washing all of our laundry with Eco Nuts for the past year and we still love them! We just now needed to purchase a second box. With the 100 Load box lasting for an entire year, it is a super deal!
Update 8/11/2014: We use three little wash bags of Eco Nuts, so I marked each one with a different colored ribbon, to help keep track of how many times they have been used. It also helps ensure that I use the same bag each time for washing cloth diapers and wipes. You can find instructions on the Eco Nuts website on how to use soap nuts for cloth diapers.
Rating (5 / 5)
Eco Nuts Natural Laundry Soap earn their first star for containing all-natural ingredients. Even the little wash bags look like they are made from natural fiber.
They earn another star for coming in a recyclable paper box, instead of a big plastic bottle.
Eco Nuts Soap Nuts earn another star for being very effective at cleaning and softening clothing, without added fragrance.
Eco Nuts are also a good value for your money. For $10 you can wash 100 loads. For comparison, you may spend around $20 for Tide HE that washes 110 loads.
Eco Nuts earn a final star for being a pleasure to use. No more cleaning up runny laundry detergent! Just throw the little bag of berries in the wash, fish it out when the washer stops, and let it dry until next time.
Eco Nuts earn an overall rating of 5 out of 5 stars and are highly recommended. Especially if you are looking for a fragrance-free or residue-free laundry detergent, give Eco Nuts a try! They are excellent for washing both clothing and cloth diapers.
