Bon Ami Powder Cleanser Review

Product Review

For this product review I tried Bon Ami Powder Cleanser, America’s Original Natural Home CleanerTM. Bon Ami (“Good Friend”) has been making natural mineral-based household cleaners since 1886.

Spring is here and it’s time for some spring cleaning! But instead of using toxic household cleaners, I will be turning to green natural cleaners to keep my home clean. Bon Ami Powder Cleanser was listed as one of the best all-purpose cleaners on EWG’s Spring Cleaning Tips on What to Use – and What to Avoid.

I picked up the 14 oz can of cleaner at Target for $1.02, now that’s a good value!

A Natural Alternative to

The mineral-based powder cleanser from Bon Ami is a safe and natural alternative to cleansers such as Ajax Powder Cleanser with Bleach, which has an F rating indicating highest concern (Potentially significant hazards to health or the environment or poor ingredient disclosure.) in EWG’s 2012 Guide to Healthy Cleaning.

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser Ingredients

  • Limestone (Calcium carbonate);
  • feldspar [mineral];
  • biodegradable cleaning agents from coconut and corn (Alkyl polyglucoside);
  • soda ash (Sodium carbonate); and
  • baking soda (Sodium bicarbonate).

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser has an A rating indicating Lowest Concern (Few/no known or suspected hazards to health or the environment. Good ingredient disclosure.) in EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning.

The Bon Ami Powder Cleanser comes in a classic steel can with a yellow and red paper label. The package contains 65% post-consumer recycled materials and is fully recyclable.

Before cleaning turned “chemical,” there was Bon Ami. We build cleaning tools made with mineral ingredients that serve a simple purpose: to return your home to a natural state of clean.

  • Sprinkle, Scrub, and Rinse. Perfect for cleaning pots and pans, the kitchen sink, bathroom tile, and other hard surfaces. Do not use on windows, glass, or mirrors. Test in a hidden spot of polished or glossy surfaces prior to using.

The Bon Ami Cleanser Powder is a pale grey color, so don’t worry if it temporarily turns your white bathtub grey- it will rinse away. What I love about this powder cleanser is that it has no smell to it. For people like me who are sensitive to fragrances and strong chemical smells, this is perfect!

This cleansing powder works well on hard surfaces like counters, bathtubs, sinks, and toilets. Just sprinkle a bit of powder on the surface you want to clean, and scrub away with a wet sponge, then rinse! It performs especially well on metal fixtures, which are left shiny clean. An old toothbrush is helpful for scrubbing faucets.

This cleaner is not meant for mirrors, so it’s best to use a separate glass cleaner.

Rating 5 Stars (5 / 5)

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser earns its first star for being made from natural ingredients.

The powder cleanser earns another star for environmental packaging. The container is made from 65% post-consumer recycled materials and is recyclable.

The Bon Ami household cleaning powder earns another star for effectively cleaning hard surfaces.

The Bon Ami cleaning powder earns another star for being a wonderful value for your money. For $1.02 it was the least expensive cleaner I saw at Target and it contains a good amount of product (14 oz).

This Bom Ami household cleaner earns a final star for being a pleasure to use. It was easy to sprinkle the powder onto a wet scrubby sponge and scrub away. I love that it has not smell to it, so I was not choking on fumes while cleaning.

Overall, Bon Ami Powder Cleanser earns 5 out of 5 stars and I recommend that everyone add it to their collection of household cleaners. It is safe, natural, odorless, effective, and affordable! Add Bon Ami Powder Cleanser to your grocery list to purchase next time you go shopping!

    Strangely, Bon Ami seems to have decided to revert to the dated older packaging design for its cleansing powder. I thought the 2010 redesign was terrific and was really taken aback when I saw they’d canned it. What do you think of their decision?

      Hi Deirdre,
      I like both versions- the old fashioned looking yellow container and the new gold container.

    You may want to review this product again, ad it may be sourced with GMO ingredients. A customer service representative at Bom Ami answered my email query recently saying that they had considered going nonGMO and decided to use GMO ingredients because it kept the cost down.

      Hi Sandra,
      It must be the corn cleaning agent that is GMO? I guess the ingredients could still be considered natural, just not organic.
